Monetization and TCO

Monetization and TCO: the Jet-Stream CDN
A Content Delivery Network can extremely improve the efficiency of an IP network. Operational costs go down, while capacity is extremely expanded, beyond your networks' physical capacity.

But a CDN is not just about lowering costs. A CDN is primarily about monetizing premium content services, but it has to do so in the most efficient way.

Many CDNs, both global CDNs and telco CDNs are struggling because of their operational costs. Many of these CDNs are not making any money: they are losing money. They are losing money on investments, transit traffic, operations and customer support.

Saving money on a CDN is not just a matter of buying less expensive gear. Although off-the-shelves servers are becoming more powerful and cheaper every year, although streaming server software isn’t the most expensive part of a CDN anymore, that isn’t enough. The real costs of operating a CDN are in daily operations: maintaining the CDN and operating the CDN.

Saving on features isn’t a good idea either, content owners will see your CDN as a commodity, bulk service instead of a premium service and will have no loyalty to your service.

Jet-Stream has proven since 2002 that it is possible to deploy a CDN that is more advanced and yet cheaper to deploy and to operate. Our own StreamZilla CDN has a healthy profit margin and a loyal customers base because we lowered the costs on all fronts, and yet maintain a premium service.

An extra benefit for network owners is that they already own and operate the infrastructure. They don’t need to build the infrastructure and organization from scratch. No transit costs. The way Jet-Stream designed its technologies enables network owners to simply upgrade their network to become a CDN. Network owners with a CDN can control the entire chain from storage to delivery; right down to the last mile while off-net CDNs can only guarantee a best effort service. Access providers are in a much better position to run a profitable CDN business compared to global CDNs.

The real surge of delivery volumes is yet to come. And that surge won’t be in plain web caching or application acceleration. Video is going to drive this surge all by itself. Existing digital television providers and access providers can benefit from the major shift to Internet based video distribution and consumption by deploying an intelligent CDN.

Monetization
The Jet-Stream CDN solution offers many features that enable network owners and account owners to monetize their CDN service.

The Jet-Stream CDN is optimized for e-commerce environments. Accounts can be provisioned by importing XML data that can be produced by an e-commerce front-end, which lets customers configure and order their personal CDN account.

We don’t lock you into a proprietary billing system. The Afterburner technology provides the CDN operator and the CDN account owners with exact traffic usage information, on a per service basis, via XML. The CDN operator can integrate their own billing system with this traffic API and CDN operators can directly tap into the CDNs database to gather additional data such as storage, server resources and other variables that can be used for billing.

Content owners really like the self-service center. It gives them much more control and transparency. This service is a premium over what other CDNs can offer which makes it easier for CDN operators to provision and sell accounts to OTT providers.

We don’t lock you or your accounts into a specific DRM solution. The Jet-Stream CDN is agnostic and transparent to DRM: each account owner can individually choose a DRM technology or service, encrypt their content and live streams and use their private CDN account to store and distribute their content in a secure way. The CDN can be used to deliver DRM keys but best practice is that a 3rd party DRM system does this. Any third party monetization service can be used to integrate with the DRM service; the CDN is not part of this process.

The Jet-Stream CDN also offers a generic content access management facility.  Account owners can block access to objects and live streams individually, manually or via their API. To manage access they need to generate a valid token per end user request, on their portal. This way, account owners and their portal partners can manage access on a per request basis, for instance after the end user has paid, or has logged in, or for any other reason without the need for DRM costs if they don't need encryption.

In addition to the generic access management facility, the Jet-Stream CDN enables content publishers to limit access to the CDN using geo-blocking features. Access can be managed up to a per country level.

Any third party monetization service can be integrated with portals and the CDN by using these features.

Another unique feature is that the Jet-Stream CDN lets you deploy dedicated resources per account. This way you can guarantee content publishers that their content will never be affected by any other user on your CDN: dedicated storage, dedicated servers, dedicated bandwidth can be sold at a premium. To save on costs you can mix dedicated core servers with existing shared fallback and bursting servers.

In addition, the Jet-Stream CDN lets you set specific business rules per account. You can give specific accounts higher priority by lowering their popularity thresholds, by giving these accounts more storage quota on the bursting servers, by setting higher TTLs and you can even enable the ‘distribute all’ function for individual accounts which will consume more backhaul bandwidth and storage but guarantees the account owner that their content is always served from the edge servers. All settings can be changed on the fly. These features allow you to ask a premium charge for your service.

TCO
Jet-Stream has taken many efforts to lower CAPEX and OPEX for building and managing a profitable and premium CDN.

No networking appliances dependency
The Jet-Stream CDN does not require you to use specific networking appliances such as routers and switches: the CDN runs on any IP network and can span multiple IP networks, regardless the underlying switching and routing gear.

No overhead appliances
The Jet-Stream CDN eliminates the need for any overhead equipment: no load balancers, no DNS servers, no storage vaults, no pop heads, et cetera. Mix internal, DAS, SAN or NAS storage.

Flexible delivery resource
Mix any vendors’ light COTS servers, heavy COTS servers, COTS blade servers, virtual servers, cloud servers and high performance appliances for the most efficient and economic architecture design. No more expensive vendor-lock-in appliances.

Maximum density
Our unique parallelization approach lets us run multiple delivery services for RTSP, RTMP, MMS, HTTP, HLS, Smooth (etc) natively on a single delivery node without using virtualization. This lowers the physical footprint of a CDN by a factor 5 (and saves dramatically in hardware, housing, power, cooling and operational costs), and you don’t have to stack virtualization on virtualization.

Light CDN core system overhead requirements
The Jet-Stream CDN can run from a bootable USB stick in any PC, it is extremely efficient code. Or it can be run on virtual servers or on a cloud platform or on physical servers. A +100Gbps operational CDN requires just 4-8 Linux servers for CDN core features and management. No further overhead equipment is mandatory.

Automation
The Jet-Stream CDN automatically, instantly takes broken services or nodes out of the active pool. And instantly reroutes requests to alternative services without any dependency on third party technologies such as DNS. This dramatically lowers the SLA costs required for the entire delivery infrastructure, while guaranteeing the highest uptime. Only the small core system needs a high level SLA. The CDN automatically alerts operational staff members when critical incidents happen.

Dynamic resources allocation
The Jet-Stream CDN allows you to manage delivery resources and storage with the finest granularity on a per account basis. This lets you optimize storage and resources much better, lowering the storage requirements on the edge nodes much further than can be done with purely caching based CDNs.

Deployment
The Jet-Stream CDN comes with training, documentation and deployment packages. A CDN core system and the CDN delivery nodes can be deployed on COTS (physical, virtual or cloud) within hours / days instead of weeks, months or quarters, by regular employees instead of many expensive specialists.

Management
The Jet-Stream CDN comes with a professional CDN management dashboard, which allows any regular employee to setup, manage and monitor the entire CDN, provision customer accounts and service customers. Jet-Stream powered CDNs over +100Gbps capacity can be managed with just 2FTE for 24*7 operations. Which is a huge cost saver compared to other solutions.

Customer support
Jet-Stream operates its own CDN called StreamZilla. We automated the top 50 support questions and built a web-based self-service center. Content owners can manage their content, setup their own live streams and see real time and historical statistics without the need for any training or documentation. This dramatically lowers the costs for customer support training and operations.

APIs
The Jet-Stream CDN provides well-documented, open standards based APIs that allow account owners to fully integrate their content publishing workflow within hours or days instead of weeks or months.

Flexible licensing
Jet-Stream offers a wide variety of licensing models with low entry and scalable options, through single purpose, multi purpose, perpetual, subscription and bursting licenses.

Flexible 3rd party licensing
You are free to choose from a wide variety of 3rd party vendors for delivery technologies (Adobe, Wowza, Microsoft for instance). Add vendors’ technologies when needed.

Embedding, recycling
Using our Jet-Stream Unified API, you can embed delivery nodes within (existing) routers, switches, TIC servers and reuse existing COTS delivery nodes.

Interconnectivity
Offload traffic to other Jet-Stream powered CDNs on a true meta-level (not locked into networking technologies or delivery vendors) using Jet-Stream CDN resources sharing features and upcoming true CDN interconnectivity and federation options.

No R&D costs
The Jet-Stream CDN is off-the-shelves technology that has been designed from the ground up for telco and ISP usage, with respect for their business and with respect for content publishers. It’s proven technology that proves that media delivery can be done in a more professional way than how Global CDNs can do, and it proves that media delivery can be monetized with higher margins than with other vendors CDN technologies.
