These specific purpose-built servers ran specific protocols and were optimized for high performance delivery, that could not be delivered by off the shelves hardware. If these digital TV platforms needed to be scaled, they simply added a few servers and hardwired content replication and load balancing. These digital TV systems are very static: integrate once, never touch them again. It was hardly ever needed to deploy extra servers, change the workflow or add additional workflows.How different is the CDN space, where new technologies, services, protocols emerge every nine to sixteen months, where new PoPs need to be deployed, where new wholesale customers with custom workflows need to be setup on a daily basis, and where new content titles and live channels are being ingested and setup every second. We are definitely leading the licensed and managed CDN business, not just visionary and technically, also economically and profit-wise. Our CDN academy was very well received by leading telecom operators and system integrators.StreamZilla has a very loyal customer base as well and saw new, larger content owners switch from generic global CDNs to our premium video delivery services thanks to ease of use, premium performance and uptime and professional customer support. This release introduces many new innovative core technologies around HTTP adaptive streaming. Commodity or Premium? Virtually all Internet CDNs have a very hard time with monetization of video delivery. Most Internet CDNs are unprofitable; some subsidize CDN service through other revenue streams, for instance, from their connectivity business. Others rely on investor subsidies for their CDN service survival. So if CDNs make money, it has not been from premium video delivery, but rather from their enterprise services, dynamic acceleration and cloud service offers.Which begs the question; is CDN video delivery now a commodity? Yes, if you buy CDN video delivery capacity from one of any number of large Internet CDNs on a best effort platform, using good enough internet, with best effort caching and best effort request routing with mediocre control panels and APIs. Not at all!Telecom operators need CDNs to offer all-screen services and to open their CDNs for wholesale scenarios to for customers and subscribers. These telcos need an on-net CDN anyway and the investments here are backed by IPTV and digital cable revenues. They incur no direct CDN running costs: they already have a network plus next generation CDN technologies enable them to roll-out and operate Terabit-sized CDNs at minimal cost compared to that which Internet CDNs have spent.StreamZilla, our 100% Jet-Streams' owned CDN platform only delivers video. At profit margins in excess 45% per annum since launch, it demonstrates organic growth of over 1600% during the past five years as proof that profit is possible. How did StreamZilla manage this without the benefits that telcos have? Even though global CDNs offer SLA's, these SLA's only cover their own pipes, servers and support.Global CDNs dump their traffic on the Internet, via carriers or peering links, on internet excanges, into ISP networks. Their SLA's don't cover any capacity guarantee, delivery guarantee or quality guarantee. So it made a lot of sense for these global CDNs to use matching technologies: caching and DNS. Both technologies are best effort technologies because they do not offer guarantee or control. Which wasn't a requirement on the Internet.Caching assumes that an edge cache can pull in an object from an origin. But what if the origin or the link to the origin is unavailable? Caching assumes that an edge cache can pull in an object in real time. But what if the origin or the link to the origin is slow? There are too many assumptions but there is no 100% guarantee that every individual viewer can get access to the requested object, there is no 100% guarantee that the file wasn't corrupted in the caching process, there is no 100% guarantee that the end user gets the object in realtime. Caching is a passive distribution technology without any guarantees. Best effort.DNS assumes that an end user is in the same region as their DNS server. But what if the user is using another DNS server? The end user will connect to a remote server, with dramatic performance reduction and higher costs for the CDN. DNS assumes that other DNS servers respect their TTLs. But what if they don't? End users will connect to a dead or overloaded cache, dramatically degrading the uptime of the CDN. Which is often a wrong assumption, especially when people use third party DNS services such as OpenDNS. The result is counter effective: instead of redirecting a user to a nearby server, users get sent to even more remote servers, which degrade the performance of the CDN instead of improving it.The Global Internet Speedup is adding a trick to DNS that passes through a part of the end users IP address so the CDN can make a better educated guess about the end users (actually their ISP’s) location and can try to do a better match to a nearby delivery node. Multiple CDNs have committed to work with this initiative.It is good that the industry finally sees that this DNS assumption is flawed and that they are trying to solve this problem. But is this the solution? No. There are some practical limitations. The proposal has not been ratified by IETF (yet). The other limitation is that there are thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands DNS servers out there: ISPs, enterprises, offices, schools, they all run their own DNS server. Their operators have to change their DNS servers. I don’t see that happen overnight. Also because this implementation will increase the number of hits on their DNS servers and could result in a performance hit on their DNS services.It is above all a workaround around the real problem and that is DNS itself. DNS was never intended to be used as a dynamic request routing mechanism. There are other wrong assumptions for DNS request routing. By deploying regional points of presence, these global CDNs could offload traffic from the small and filled up transit links. Global CDNs use the internet to distribute content to their regional hubs, and then ‘dump’ their traffic into internet service provider (ISP) networks. Which was a great approach for many years: costs went down, performance went up. Videos in some formats did not play or had terrible performance. According to Vodafone they were blocking specific content formats by mistake and the problems should have been solved. The company said it has nothing to do with their on-the-fly media transcoding system.The company is deploying Bytemobile video optimization technology which degrades video quality based upon the end users device capacity. I wonder if content owners and content publishers know about this and if they let mobile operators keep touching their content.Nine hour T-Mobile outage Yesterday, T-Mobile NL had a nationwide outage yesterday, which lasted for nine hours. According to T-Mobile a conflicting subsystem in their main dispatch caused the outage. Over two million subscribers were not able to call or text message and mobile data was interrupted as well. After the issue was found, T-Mobile turned on subscribers in batches, many of whom were woken in the middle of the night because all their text messages came through once their connection was re-established.Mobile Operators pushing WiFi. Or not? An increasing number of mobile operators have started to offer paid WiFi services for hotel chains. Premium hotels used to offer free WiFi, but an increasing number of hotels are now charging extreme rates like €10 per hour for (crappy, slow) WiFi services. I heard the EU is looking into this because it looks like mobile operators are abusing this position to force end users to pay extreme amounts for data either way via the Hotel’s WiFi or via their 3G service. But eventually subscribers will want to be able to consume the content beyond their home area. Internet usage is very low*. Connectivity to Africa is very limited and very expensive.There’s hardly any business for traditional global CDNs. No volume! Except for one or two basic web caches, there’s no serious CDN presence in Africa.Because of this, the Internet in Africa is in a deadlock: traffic is scarce and expensive, so demand stays low. Content services cannot start. Chicken and egg.But at the same time, Africa’s telecommunications market is among the fastest growing in the world. Landlines are almost impossible, so the growth is in mobile. An increasing number of countries are deploying full mobile coverage, even in rural areas. We don’t expect Africa to fill in the current gap with the Western and Asian internet but mobile web consumption will grow dramatically.This is actually a very promising situation for a smarter CDN in Africa. So logically I get a lot of questions about my strategies with Jet Stream and especially StreamZilla. Which I of course won’t share :-)What I can tell is that we have been able to get the highest margins in our industry so far. Which is important because we need to invest as well. StreamZilla has been profitable from the start and although we don’t have the highest traffic volumes, we do have good margins, and we keep increasing our margins. Most CDNs think it is all about volume and traffic. That is just partially true. So we had a great trip on the Autobahn. 250KM/h (155MPH) :) The iPad is a wonderful and addictive device. It is great for video. We run some test live streams in our lab (shielded off from the internet) so I actually could watch the World Soccer Championship today live in my garden. Netherlands vs Slovakia. We won!Anyway, the short demo video below demonstrates how easy it is to stream live and vod video to mobile devices. The fact that we can stream to an iPad isn’t that exciting though. AT&T’s network was degrading. Phone calls dropped. At some peak times a third of all calls dropped. More and more AT&T customers throughout the U.S. started to complain about slow data, lost data connectivity and dropped calls.When I attended Content Delivery Summit in New York this month I experienced exactly the same. Calls dropped, or I suddenly got voicemail messages without getting calls. 3G was slower than GPRS. The phone constantly switched between 3G, GPRS and Edge, and lost connections many times. The signal strength kept changing from max to a single bar. In-session switching between 3G, GPRS and Edge is a drama, because your IP address gets lost so your stream / email / surfing session gets lost too.I’ve had the same issues in the past with KPN when they just introduced 3G. In the first 2 years, I had to switch 3G off to be sure I could be reached. It has been fixed, but in recent months I occasionally miss phone calls and get voicemail messages much later.Last week, T-Mobile (another provider with exclusive iPhone contracts) publicly admitted having similar problems in the Netherlands. And my conclusion was that the Last Mile could perfectly handle future growth, but that the true bottlenecks were at the ISP core backbones, the Internet Exchange and their interconnects (public and private peers).The experts claimed that broadband services would require more than 20Mbps capacity per household. Maybe even 100Mbps in the future. But there was no research done to prove this claim.
