Video cause 20-fold traffic increase in 4 years

DE-CIX, The German Internet exchange, among – if not the- largest Internet hubs of the world, is expecting data traffic to increase 20 fold by the end of 2015. An important point that drives the yearly doubling of Internet traffic is the increasing HDTV content broadcasts – the number of terminal devices with high definition capability is going to explode in the coming years…

“We don’t expect newly connected customers to cause the largest traffic growth at DE-CIX in the next years, but rather HD video and TV content which is used in more and more households due to the sharp increase in the number of terminal devices” says Frank P. Orlowski, DE-CIX Director of Business Development & Marketing.

According to a survey carried out by the US market researcher, IN-STAT, the number of webtv capable terminal devices will grow six fold by 2014 and reach 230 million. The market researchers assume that these terminal devices will be found primarily in the USA and Europe. DE-CIX is convinced: High definition IP-TV signals will be the central engine for Internet traffic growth in the coming years.
